Transfer Case, Control Trac, Explorer

The Control Trac 44-05 transfer case (7A195) transmits torque to front wheels through an electro-mechanical ball ramp clutch after a pre-determined delta speed between front and rear driveshafts (4602) is exceeded. These driveshaft speeds are monitored using Hall effect sensors that send signals to the new on-board Generic Electronic Module (GEM). Upon observing an exceeded delta speed, the GEM then activates the transfer case clutch coil with a varying current to minimize the delta speed.

4x4 Mode Selector Switch, Ranger, Explorer
The operator is informed which mode the system is in by two cluster indicator lamps, one for 4WD HIGH and one for 4WD LOW (in 4WD LOW, both lamps are on). The module accomplishes shifts between different system modes by interpreting inputs from 4x4 selector switch, the vehicle speed signal, and the transfer case contract plates. Based on these inputs, two relays (L2H and H2L directional control), the transfer case motor, and an output for the transfer case electric clutch, are used to shift into 2WD, 4WD HIGH, or 4WD LOW. The module will not allow shifts into 4WD LOW unless the brake is depressed, the vehicle is in NEUTRAL (with automatic transmission vehicles), the clutch is pressed (in manual transmission vehicles), and the speed is less than 3 mph.
Solid State 4x4 Clutch Relay, Explorer
Control Trac 4-Wheel Drive (Explorer)

This feature electronically shifts the vehicle transfer case between 2WD, auto 4WD, and 4WD LOW. The system mode is selected by the operator through a three-position rotary switch on the instrument panel. The operator is informed which mode the system is in by two cluster indicator lamps, one for 4WD HIGH and one for 4WD LOW. The module accomplishes shifts between different system modes by interpreting inputs from the 4x4 selector switch, vehicle speed signal, transfer case rear and front shaft Hall effect speed sensors, and the transfer case contact plates. Based on these inputs, the shifts are controlled through two outputs to the Center Axle Engage and Disengage solenoids, two relays (L2H and H2L directional control) to control the transfer case shift motor, and an output for the transfer case electric clutch. While in the automatic four-wheel drive mode, the electric clutch engagement is automatically controlled based on front and rear shaft speed differences (wheel slippage); transferring increased traction to the front wheels. The electric clutch is fully engaged when in the 4WD LOW mode.

NOTE:
There is no transfer case movement between 2WD and A4WD.

Mechanical Shift Transfer Case

NOTE:
It is important to remember that electronic shift transfer cases do not have a selectable neutral position. Because of this, if vehicles equipped with electronic shift are to be towed for long distances, the rear driveshaft should be disconnected. If this is not done, the transfer case (which is protected by positive lubrication) will drive the transmission (7003) (which is not lubricated under these conditions), and may cause damage to the transmission.

NOTE:
On the Control Trac, neutral is available as a dealer-installed option and is activated when four specific conditions are met:

1. Ignition switch in OFF position (steering not locked).

2. Automatic transmission in NEUTRAL position.

3. Vehicle speed is 0 km/h (0 mph).

4. The brake is depressed for 5 seconds. A tone will indicate neutral was achieved.
